Kapama Game Reserve
Kapama is one of South Africa’s largest privately owned Game
Reserves, and comprises 13 000 hectares and extends from the R40 road in the west
to the boundary with Thornybush Reserve in the east; and from the Eastgate
Airport road in the north to Klaserie Dam in the south. Along with the Kapama
River, the languid Klaserie River also flows through the reserve – both Rivers serve
as natural water sources for the resident wildlife.
Kapama is in South Africa’s Limpopo province, and known for its high density of big game animals. A game drive in Kapama Game Reserve, with a qualified ranger and expert tracker, reveals Africa’s big game and many secrets of the other marvels of the African bush.
With the mighty Drakensberg Mountains in the distance and iconic Kruger National Park to the east, Kapama is part of the greater Kruger area. Not only is the Reserve home to the Big Five, you can also find over 40 other mammal species and some 350 species of birds. Game drives and bush walks offer fascinating encounters with wildlife, but Kapama also offers guests unique African wildlife experiences. Elephant-back safaris through the untamed bush enable you to view game from atop a habituated African elephant. There are also guided personal elephant interactions, where the elephants are so close you can touch them.
Once an extensive farm, harsh conditions and predators took their toll on the cattle, and the owners decided to transform the vast property into an ecotourism business. Named Kapama for the river that runs through the reserve, today Buffalo Camp stands on the original farm and River Lodge on the second farm. Extensive tracts of land have since been acquired and added to Kapama.
The region is serviced by Hoedspruit's Eastgate Airport, a mere 10-minute drive from the entrance to the reserve, and transferring to the lodge in open vehicles means game viewing right from arrival - so your safari starts even before check-in.
