Johannesburg
Johannesburg is South Africa's premier commercial city, and is home the country's stock exchange (situated in Sandton, in the northern suburbs). Johannesburg's International Airport (OR Tambo International) also acts as a hub for the majority of International, Regional and Domestic flights.
However, the city and its environs hosts a excellent variety of cultural and historical venues and attractions, not least of which deals with South Africa's recent history. Johannesburg was founded in 1886 when gold was discovered in Langlaagte. It grew rapidly, and was declared a municipality in 1897.
