Flamingo Bay Water Lodge is placed on stilts in crystal clear waters – the lodge is actually in a tidal estuary. Flamingo Bay has access to the open ocean which is a short walk out the back of the lodge. Guests also enjoy frequent and regular complimentary vehicle transfers throughout the day to Barra Lodge in order to enjoy its facilities right on the main beach as well as all the activities on offer. This eco-paradise is home to flocks of flamingo’s, tropical fish and the very rare dugong. The warm Indian Ocean offers safe bathing all year round.Accommodation is in luxury water chalets which are both spacious and well-appointed, complete with balcony, wide opening sliding doors and air-conditioning. The chalets and furniture are constructed from beautiful local hardwoods. Sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling and boating may be enjoyed directly from each chalet.
The main building and chalets are connected by wooden walkways where golf carts are available to ferry guests. The main building can also be accessed from the land and is fronted by the tidal waters of the bay.
An elegant restaurant overlooks the inviting swimming pool which merges into the view across the bay. You can enjoy cocktails on the spacious pool deck whilst watching the sunset or enjoy your meals either indoors or outdoors. The gourmet restaurant offers sumptuous dining, with a menu specialising in local dishes, which are rich in fresh prawns, fish, crabs and calamari – all of which are caught locally. The well-stocked bar is a gathering point attracting guests to share their day’s experiences and enjoy the magical sunsets. An upstairs area enhances the view as the day draws to a close.
In addition there is a comfortable lounge which allows you space to relax, while enjoying a drink or light snack.
Flamingo Bay shares most of it activities with Barra Lodge, where there is a fully equipped PADI dive centre with all the necessary facilities including kitting-up rooms, filling station, rest areas, kit storage, lecture and first-aid areas.
You can also enjoy an Ocean Safari, which are available for diver and non-divers wishing to see the magnificent Whale shark (a seasonal visitor) and Dolphins. There is also a Catamaran, on which you can experience unforgettable day trips in the secluded estuary. Trips to Pansy Island are offered as well as snorkelling trips. Guests should also try a Dhow trip, as these vessels are still built locally, to traditional specifications.
Behind Barra Lodge is a saltwater mangrove with crystal clear waters which can be explored by boat or on foot. You might also like to visit historical Inhambane City – as this was the southerly most trading port in Africa used by the Arabs.
The Loge also offers guided horse rides on the beach – which are also suitable for novice riders. For the more adventurous, there is also Quad biking through the coconut plantations. These are guided, and allow you to experience the real Mozambique. The bay is also ideal for Hobie-cat and laser dingy sailing. In addition you can try snake rides, paddle ski’s, surfboards and boogie boards… And fishermen are also catered for – as there is a good number of game fish in the local (tag and release is encouraged).
